How is otoplasty performed?

Otoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia, depending on the case. The surgical technique varies depending on the deformity to be corrected, but in general an incision is made behind the ear to access the auricular cartilage. The cartilage is restructured and molded to achieve the desired shape. Finally, the incision is closed with sutures.

Recovery from otoplasty is usually quick and without complications. The patient can return home the same day of surgery. It is recommended to wear a headband for a few days to protect the ears. Most patients can return to normal activities within a week or two.

Otoplasty can be performed from the age of 6, which is when the ears have already reached a size close to their final size. In some cases, it can be done even earlier if the ear deformity is very evident and affects the child's social development.
